1. Viruses Flashcards
What are viruses also known as?
obligate intracellular parasites
How are viruses able to reproduce?
inside a host cell
What is the basic structure of all viruses?
nucleic acid genome packaged in a protein shell
What is the main limiting factor for virus genomes?
size
What is a bacteriophage?
virus that infects bacteria
What are the three main ways the viral genomes have evolved to accomodate size?
- genome contains very few genes
- virus relies on host-encoded proteins for transcription, translation, and replication
- genomes encode more than one protein in a given length of genome
What is a capsid?
protein coat that surrounds the viral nucleic genome
What is the capsid head?
houses the genome
What are the tail fibers and base plates?
attaches to the surface of the host cell
What is the sheath?
contracts using energy from stored ATP to inject the genome into the host cell
What is the envelope?
structure that surrounds the capsid found in many animal viruses that contains phospholipids, proteins, and carbohydrates from the host membrane
What are naked viruses?
viruses that do not contain an envelope
What determines which host cells viruses can infect?
surface of the virus
What are the three main steps of the bacteriophage life cycle?
- attachment/absorption
- penetration/eclipse
3.enter either the lytic or lysogenic cycle
What is attachment/absorption?
binding to the exterior of a bacterial cell
