Ellis Island:
Emma Lazarus?
The island in New York where immigrants from all over would come to be questioned, inspected, and prodded at, many being sent back. (Momo came through there from Denmark, too!
Emma Lazarus: Wrote the engraved poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty, The New Colossus.
Angel Island:
The island off of the west coast that all Asian immigrants came to in the thousands. People would wait for months and would be sent back frequently.
Steerage:
Steerage was the cheapest accommodation on boats coming to America from Europe, so it was often chosen. Although, it was crowded, crawling with disease, and ugly.
Why did people come to America:
To bring more family, to purchase land in the EU, better jobs, less poverty, no forced military, food prices, religious prosecution, and breaking away from the class system/climbing the social ladder.
Nativism:
The ideology the America is for Americans, but what defines an American? Basically the discrimination of immigrants.
Chinese Exclusion Act:
Was the first Act in US history to place restrictions on an immigrant group. Signed in 1882, it created a 10 year ban on all Chinese immigrants entering the US.
