Plessy vs. Ferguson

A

A court case in which Homer Plessy challenged a Louisiana law saying he had to sit in a “colored” railroad car. He was only 1/8 black and had a light complexion. The court upheld the right of the states. They set out a new doctrine called separate, but equal.

A

Laws that actually enforced segregation. Examples: Black and White children could not go to school together, and transportation was “separate, but equal”.

Methods of Disenfranchisement:

A

Since states could not disobey the 15th Amendment, they made ways to get around it, like a Poll Tax, impossible literacy tests, and the grandfather clause which said that if you or an ancestor 1886, you would be exempt from the previous.

Methods of Enforcement of Jim Crow:

A

Jim Crow Laws were informed by many things, such as violence, arrest and fines, and especially lynching, where people would be hung publicly as a spectacle and a warning. This was often done by groups like the KKK.
