3. Historical and Societal Influences - Aeronautical Engineering Flashcards
How does Aeronautical effect people’s lives?
(positives)
(try and give 4-6 )
Significantly reduced travel times. Before it the trip from Sydney to London took 6 weeks.
- Royal flying doctors help regional Australia. There are also other rescue mission flights.
- Traveling in time constraints is easier, this also helps with overseas commerce.
- Families who live overseas can still be close.
- Less casualties in the military as there are less ground troops.
- Can fight bush fires to protect property, people and animals.
- Gather news, images and photos.
- Boosted tourism, especially for isolated counties like Australia.
How does aeronautical effect people’s lives?
negatives
Pollution: created by piston and turbine engines (exhaust gasses). Fuel dumping is also a thing. And so is noise pollution from turbines. They have been altered for this reason.
Insect Spraying: for land needed (airports etc) major impact on food chain.
Destruction: Aerial bombing has risen since WW2. German industries were destroyed. Vietnam war saturation bombing.
What are some important developments in the history of aeronautical engineering?
(Give 2-3 developments)
- The Wright Brothers’ first powered flight of the biplane.
- Introduction of ailerons, a type of flap mounted to the outboard surface of each wing, allowing for variation in lift.
- Development of the turbojet engine.
- Development of the jet engine.
- Introduction of variable geometry wing (swing-wing) technology.
