What are the structure/property relationships and their application?

- Organic compounds
- May be natural or synthetic
- Based on the carbon chain
- Thermosoftening polymers are recyclable
- Thermosetting polymers are generally not easily recycled
- Thermosetting polymers have strong molecular bonds
- Thermosetting polymers decompose when heated
- Thermosetting polymers are impervious to solvents
Uses include aircraft canopies, windscreens, windows, structural members, tyres, coatings, wall sections and interior linings.

What are the manufacturing processes for thermosetting polymers?
A
Compression Moulding: A general term to describes many processes that rely on the application of pressure to distribute polymer over a mould to form a product.
Hand Layup: Fiber reinforcements are placed by hand in a mold and resin is applied with a brush or roller. This process is used to make both large and small items, including boats, storage tanks, tubs and showers.
