1. Thermosetting Polymers Flashcards

1
Q

What are the structure/property relationships and their application?

A
  • Organic compounds
  • May be natural or synthetic
  • Based on the carbon chain
  • Thermosoftening polymers are recyclable
  • Thermosetting polymers are generally not easily recycled
  • Thermosetting polymers have strong molecular bonds
  • Thermosetting polymers decompose when heated
  • Thermosetting polymers are impervious to solvents

Uses include aircraft canopies, windscreens, windows, structural members, tyres, coatings, wall sections and interior linings.

Q

What are the manufacturing processes for thermosetting polymers?

A

Compression Moulding: A general term to describes many processes that rely on the application of pressure to distribute polymer over a mould to form a product.
Hand Layup: Fiber reinforcements are placed by hand in a mold and resin is applied with a brush or roller. This process is used to make both large and small items, including boats, storage tanks, tubs and showers.
Vacuum Bagging:
