Q

Advs of waxy substance on exoskeleton

A
  • protects soft tissue as its not exposed
  • waterproof so limits water loss

Q

Disadvs of waxy substance on exoskeleton

A
  • heavy
  • thicker exchange surface which decreases rate of diffusion

Q

Describe the process of gas exchange in an insect

A
  • air enters the insect through spiracles along the side of the body
  • air moves into the trachea
  • trachea are highly branched into many tracheoles which penetrate between cells and muscle fibres
  • gas exchange occurs between tracheoles and body cells
