2: CELLS - ACTIVE AND PASSIVE IMMUNITY Flashcards
What is active immunity?
- immunity you get when your immune system produces antibodies in response to an antigen
- lymphocytes differentiate into memory cells and the person obtains long lasting immunity
What are the 2 types of active immunity?
- natural
- artificial
What is natural active immunity?
immunity when the immune system is exposed to an antigen/pathogen and counteracts it
What is artificial active immunity?
immunity when given a vaccination containing a harmless dose of antigen
What is passive immunity?
- immunity you get when given antibodies made by a different organism
- your immune system does not produce the antibodies so immunity is short term
What are the 2 types of passive immunity?
- natural
- artificial
What is natural passive immunity?
immunity of a baby due to antibodies received from a mother via placenta and breast milk
What is artificial passive immunity?
immunity when injected with antibodies from someone else (eg: from blood donations)
