3. En-route IFR procedures Flashcards
When should you request your airways join clearance?
When at least 10mins flying time from intended joining point
Can you be climbing when joining the airway?
No, you need to be at the cleared level as per your clearance when crossing the AWY BDRY.
Otherwise you need permission from ATC.
ATC give you a DCT TO beacon, but it’s outside DOC, what do you do?
- DCT TO via GPS OR
- Turn onto DR heading
until within DOC
When do you listen out for the ATIS?
- When in the CRZ, ideally on AP
- !Put ATIS on Box 2,
Don’t let it drown out Box 1, otherwise you could miss a call for you! - You could also listen to the VOLMET
- Are the conditions suitable?
Besides the ATIS, what are your other goals in the cruise phase?
- CRZ checks
- Set up as much as you can of the approach
If no AP - do things slowly and one at a time - deviation of 300’ is a level bust
- Refresh ETA and Fuel calcs for the remaining points
- Notify examiner if delta >3 mins
- Need a fuel check at least once every 30’
- Anticipate change of WPT with 1% of GS and turn early
How would you know ice is forming on the aircraft?
- Visually - OAT probe, windshield, LE of wing
- ENG VIB - ice on props
- Poor radio and NAV - ice on aerials
- High PWR required for same performance - more weight due ice
- Rough running engine - (induction icing)
- Erroneous instrument indications - ice on pitot/static
What are your options if you’re in icing conditions?
- Continue at same altitude
- (Ask ATC about cloud tops) Climb into VMC
- Turn back
- Descend into warmer air
Always ask ATC before changing, always check MSA
Icing should be reported to ATC to warn others - time, location, level, intensity, icing type, A/C type
How soon should you contact ATC before their airspace boundary?
at least 10mins before
What does ATC require from you before you come to the beacon for a hold?
- ETA for beacon
- for you to be level at instructed level 5 minutes (~10nm before) the beacon
- You may have to climb if you are not first for the approach
Time corrections during VFR NAV?
- Ask yourself why, cumulative (due change in ground speed) or one off (due to enroute climb etc.)
- If one-off, add/subtract error to ETA
- If cumulative, multiply by proportion of track flown and add/subtract to ETA
- Time adj. - multiply minutes late/early by inverse proportion of leg flown - adjust ETA
Describe the basic S&L work cycle
-
Attitude
- Select
- Hold
- Trim
- Coarse - Feel
- Fine - visual
- Lookout - From straight ahead search to one side as far as practical, then back to the front
- Attitude - Check, reselect and trim if necessary.
- Performance - are you achieving datums? Confirm that the aircraft is maintaining the desired performance
Workload management ENR.
Describe your checks you have to do enroute and where?
What are typical fuel flows for different power settings?
35% - 5.2 USG/hr (both)
55% - 8 USG/hr (both)
70% - 10.5 USG/hr (both)
90% - 14.4 USG/hr (both)
How soon should you contact ATC before going into their airspace?
What is your radio call to them?
Civilian - 10 mins
Military - 5min/15nm (greater of 2)
R/T
- Callsign
- Type
- Dep to Dest
- PPOS, Level
- Intentions
What is the Enroute Wake turbulence separation?
- L—>M (5 nm)
- L—>H (6 nm)
- L—>S (8 nm )
