3 Diaphragmatic Breathing and Core Flashcards
What happens with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
Air often becomes trapped in the lungs, pushing down on the diaphragm. The neck and chest muscles must then assume and increased share of the work of breathing. This can leave the the diaphragm weakened and flattened, causing it to work less efficiently.
What are some of the effects of diaphragmatic breathing?
- Strengthen the diaphragm
- Decrease the work of breathing by slowing your breathing rate
- Decreased oxygen demand
- Use less effort and energy to breathe
How is diaphragmatic breathing technique accomplished lying down?
How is diaphragmatic breathing technique accomplished sitting in a chair?
As far as the spine is concerned, how is stabilization defined?
Maintaining the spine in a neutral, safe, pain free position through continuous fine adjustments in muscle tension in response to fluctuations loads.
The core can be described as a musculature box, with the borders:
- Front: abdominals
- Back: paraspinals and gluteals
- Roof: diaphragm
- Bottom: pelvic floor and hip girdle muscle
What’s the difference between global muscles and deep segmental muscles of the spine?
What are the global muscles that stabilize the spine?
What are the deep segmental muscles that stabilize the spine?
What is “Setting the core”?
“Setting the core” refers to the co-contraction transversus abdominis and the multifidus where the Abdominal Hollowing aka Drawing-In Maneuver technique is used.
___ technique is used to activate transversus abdominis and other muscles including the external and internal obliques.
Abdominal bracing
How was the abdominal hollowing technique (drawing in maneuver) accomplished?
How is Multifidii Strengthening accomplished?
How is self stretching accomplished for the abdominals?
How is passive or self stretching accomplished for Lumbar Spine muscles?
