3 - DGM Flashcards
DG by air code ‘A’ means what?
Air portable, cleared for carriage only on fixed wing aircraft.
DG by air code ‘B’ means what?
Air portable, the item has been cleared for carriage only on RW aircraft
DG by air code ‘R’ means what?
Restricted, specific written auth of the DDH (detailed in Chapter 1.5)
DG by air code ‘Y’ means what?
Code Y shows the item is cleared for carriage on fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
What does the lack of a DG by air code means?
Specific written auth of the DDH will be required for flight.
Can you carry manifolded cylinders in RAF AT aircraft?
Only if there is a specific leaflet in the DGM or written DDH approval.
What is UN Class 1 and it’s subdivisions?
- 1 - Mass explosion hazard
- 2 - Blast/Projection hazard
- 3 - Fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard/or a minor projection hazard or both. But no mass explosion hazard.
- 4 - No significant hazard, effects contained within packaging
- 5 - Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard
- 6 - Extremely insensitive substances which do not have a mass explosion hazard

D - Secondary Explosive or primary explosive with two protective features.
Eg hand grenades 1.2D
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group E?
E - Secondary Explosive, not self initiating with propelling charge.
Eg Artillery ammunition, rockets, guided missiles
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group F?
F - Secondary detonating explosive substance with its own means of initiation, with propelling charge.
Eg RPG
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group G?
G - Pyrotechnic substance or article containing a pyrotechnic substance or article
Eg flares, illuminating ammunition
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group H?
H - Article containing both explosive substance and white phosphorus
Eg White Phos or other pyrophoric ammunition
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group J?
J - Ammunition containing both explosives and flammable liquids or gels
Eg Napalm
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group K?
K - Articles containing both an explosive substance and a toxic chemical agent
Eg shells or bombs with lethal or incapacitating chemical agents
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group L?
L - Explosive substance or article presenting a special risk needing isolation of each type.
Eg damaged or suspect ammo of any group or hyperbolic liquid fuelled rocket engines.
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group N?
N - Hazard div 1.6 ammunition containing only extremely insensitive detonating substance
Eg warheads and bombs that have been tested to assure non-propagation
What is UN Class 1 compatibility group S?
S - Substance or articles so packed or designed that any hazardous effects arising from accidental functioning are confined within the package.
Eg small arms cartridges
What are the general principles of carriage of DG by Air?
- Package(s) shall be from leaks and in a safe condition for carriage.
- Consignments shall be loaded nearest to the cargo door when practical (when aircraft trim and/or role restrictions permit)
- Consignments shall be stowed away from objects or projections which could puncture or otherwise damage the container.
- Consignments shall be stowed away from any source of radiant heat such as hot air ducts or under-floor heating systems.
What are the principles for handling and loading packages containing liquid DG?
- Always handled, loaded and stowed in accordance with their ‘this way up’ label.
- Packages with this label shall be stowed on the main floor or holds that are level.
- Such packages are not to be stowed on angled ramps except where otherwise permitted in the DGM.
Who can modify the segregation and mixing rules?
DDH
Which DG classes/items do not require segregation and may be stowed/overstowed with other classes?
a) 1.4S and classes 6, 7, 9
b) DG in excepted quantities
c) Lithium batteries of UN 3091 & UN 3481
d) DG classified as “Not Restricted” by the terms of a Special Provision
How far must Compatibility group B be kept from C,D,E,F?
Not less than 2 metres
