Consciousness
A state in which an awareness of oneself or one’s environment is changed or altered
Altered state of consciousness
A process in which a person observes and describes were here she thinks, feels, and senses.
Introspection
As described by Sigmund Freud, the unconscious thoughts, memories, feelings, and sensations that can be brought into conscious awareness.
The preconscious
The simultaneous functioning of both the conscious and unconscious minds.
Two-track mind
The ability to bring only some of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations into your conscious awareness.
Selective attention
A theory stating that the mind is composed of both conscious and unconscious activity.
Dual-processing theory
A relaxed state brought on by suggestions from another person
Hypnosis
A theory stating that under hypnosis, our consciousness divides; one part of the mind is open to hypnotic suggestion retains an awareness of its surroundings.
Dissociation theory
A theory stating that hypnosis is not a unique state of consciousness and that when people think they are hypnotized, they are actually acting out of a role.
Role theory
A theory that hypnosis combines dissociation theory, role theory, and selective attention.
