2-Perception Flashcards
The process of organizing and interpreting sensory information
Perception
What is the Gestalt school of thought?
A school of psychology that sees the brain is holistic–it is a system that cannot be understood by looking at individual parts. Gestalt psychologists believe that our brain is a master of organizing small pieces to create one whole, meaningful picture of reality.
The illusion of movement from still images that change
Phi phenomenon
Name three Gestalt principles of organization.
- Figure and ground (background vs object)
- Similarity (grouping similar things)
- Proximity (grouping nearby things)
- Continuity (seeing smooth contours)
- Closure (filling gaps in shapes)
Cells in the visual cortex that respond to different characteristics, or features, of a visual stimulus.
Feature detectors
Define bottom-up processing.
The creation of a whole picture from small pieces
Feature detection
Define top down processing.
Perceiving a whole image first, and then noticing the pieces.
(Gestalt)
Perceiving an object from different angles will still seeing it as the same object
Perceptual constancy
The mind’s expectations for what it will see
Perceptual set
The mind as created by the brain along with the rest of the body
Embodied mind
Thinking that depends on the body
Embodied cognition
