2-Nervous And Endocrine System Flashcards
Nervous system
The body’s electrochemical system for communicating, processing, and storing information.
Neurons
Nerve cells
Synapses
Tiny gaps between neurons
Soma
Nerve cell body
Axon
A long hair like extension of a nerve that transmits electrical impulses as outgoing messages
Dendrites
Bridge like extensions of a neuron the pick up information from the brain cells and transmitted to the cell body
Neurotransmitter
A chemical substance that is released by one neuron into the synapse to influence the other
Central nervous system
Portion of the nervous system consisting of brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Portion of nervous system that relays info between the central nervous system and the rest of the body
Somatic nervous system
Portion of peripheral nervous system that carries messages to and from the sense organs, skin, and muscles
Autonomic nervous system
Portion of the peripheral nervous system that regulates the action of organs and glands.
Two parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic nervous system
Portion of autonomic nervous system responds to stress
Fight or flight response
Raising heart rate
Raising blood pressure
Suppressing digestive activity
Parasympathetic nervous system
Helps body recover from stress
