Definition of fetal period
From beginning of 9th week to birth and characterized by:
Maturation of tissues and organs
Rapid growth of body
What happens during 3rd month
▪️Face becomes more human looking
▪️Limbs reach their relative length in comparison with rest of the body
▪️primary ossification centers are present in long bones and skull by 12th week
▪️external genitalia develop
▪️loop of intestine withdraws back in
What happens during 4th and 5th month
▪️Fetus lengthens rapidly ▪️weight increases(less than 500g at 5th month) ▪️covered with fine hair (lanugo hair) ▪️eyebrows and hair also visible ▪️movements felt by mother
What is the first move of baby called
Quikening
What happens during 2nd half of intrauterine life
Weight inc (should be 50% of full term weight)
What happens during 6th month
▪️Skin of fetus is reddish and has a wrinkled appearance due to lack of underlying connective tissue
▪️resp and CNS are still not fully developed
What happens during last 2 months
▪️fetus obtains well rounded contours as a result of deposition of subcutaneous fat
▪️by end of intrauterine life skin is covered by whitish fatty substance (vernix caseosa) composed of secretory products
When can sounds be heard
24-26 weeks
When are eyes sensitive to light
28 weeks
What happens by end of 9th month
▪️skull has the largest circumference of all parts of body
▪️normal weight is 3000 to 3400 g
▪️CRL is about 36 cm and its CHL is about 50 cm
▪️sexual characteristics are pronounced
Clinical correlation:low birth weight
Genetically determined mostly
Can be environmentally determined
Intrauterine growth restriction
In risk of: neurological deficiencies, congenital malformations, meconium aspiration, hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, and RDS
May be due to chromosomal abnormalities,congenital infections, poor maternal health
