2b. Weight Loss Flashcards
How might genetic predispositions contribute to obesity?
Common in labs and flat coated retrievers there is a mutation of the POMC gene
increased body weight, increased fat percentage and increased food motivation
How might food intak affect obesity?
Accuracy of food intake can affect obesity
Individuals measuring a liquid cup were the most continuously inaccurate, Food scoop is the second and dry cup was the most accurate.
What are some of the most accurate ways to measure food?
Gram scale, measuring cup, food scoop or other cup
What does 10% mean in regards to food intake
Can’t use 10% more treats and any unbalanced food (table scraps, supplements, dental chews) anything additional than their formulated food.
Should not make up more than 10% of their daily caloric needs
What are he steps in developing a weight los splan?
patient assessment and nutritional hx (includes BCS, complete dietary hx (type of food, how much, frequency, treats, supplements, table items, toppers. assess current feeding amounts (are they appropriate, what volume of food is this pet used to eating?)
2. calculate ideal body weight
3. Determining energy needs and feeding amounts
4. recheck and monitor
5. post-weight loss adjustments
5. weight loss adjustments
How do we calculate an ideal BW of an overweight patient?
current body weight divide by percentage factor. Ex. 6/9 = 10% overweight or 1.10
Ex. a 6.5 kg cat that’s 7/9 or 20% overweight
6.5/1.20 = ideal BW 5.4
What formula can we use to determine energy needs and feeding amounts?
DOGS: MER = RERx1.0 =(70x(BWcurrent)^0.75)x1.0
MER = 70x(BWtarget)^0.75
CATS: MER = RER x 0.8
(70x(BWcurrent)^0.75)x0.8
MER = 53(BWtarget)^0.711
How can we calculate humphry’s energy needs and feeding amounts. He weight 6.5kg and his ideal body weight is 5.4
70(6.5)^0.75 = 285kcal
MER = 1.0 x 285kcal = 285 kcal
RER: 53(5.4)^0.711 = 176kcal
Does the diet matter?
patients often require significant energy restrictions to achieve weight loss
Ex. At 176kcal/day, this is only 60% of humphry’s MER for current weight
If we cut back on his diet, we’re feeding 40% less calories. What else are we feeding less of?
Why might we feed weight loss diets instead of just simply cutting back feed?
formulas has been specifically formulated to be fed safely at caloric restriction WITHOUT restricting essential nutrients
What are healthy rates of weight loss for cats and dogs?
dogs: 1-2% of initial body weight per week
cats: 0.5-1% of initial body weight per week
Once the weight loss has reached ideal weight, we may need to readjust our amounts, what are some steps to take to increase caloric intake, what if the weight increased/decreased, and what if the weight remained steadY?
Inc caloric intake by 10% - recheck
176kcal to 194kcal. 60G
Weight dec, inc by 10% again - 194kcal to 213kcal. 66g
Weight inc, dec by 5% - 194 to 184. 57g
Did weight remain steady, continue feeding amounts so 194. 66g
