Monroe Doctrine
a U.S. policy of opposition to European interference in Latin America. It stated that American continents were not to be considered for future colonization by European powers. Resulted in Cuba declaring independence.
caudillo
a military dictator of a Latin American country. They were able to hold onto power because they were backed by the military. By the mid-1800’s, nearly all of the countries in Latin America were ruled by caudillos.
Spanish-American War
an 1898 conflict between the US and spain, in which the US supported the Cubans’ fight for independence. The US forces launched a surprise attack on the Phillipines, a spanish colony. The Spanish military quickly collapsed and Cuba became independent.
Panama Canal
a human-made waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, built in Panama and opened in 1914. Shortened the trip from the East and West coast of the US and ships around the world began to use it. Latin America had become a crossroads of world trade and the US tollgated the canal.
Roosevelt corollary
President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1904 extension of the Monroe Doctrine, in which he declared that the US had the permission to have “police power” throughout the Western Hemisphere. Used multiple times to justify intervention in Latin America. The US troops occupied some countries for decades and the Latin Americans could do nothing about it.
