Emperor Mutsuhito
symbolized Japan’s sense of pride and nationalism. When the shogun stepped down, Mutsuhito took over and named his reign the Meiji era. Modernized Japan.
Treaty of Kanagawa
An 1854 agreement between the US and Japan which opened 2 Japanese ports to US ships and allowed the US to set up an embassy in Japan. Many other nations followed the US and gained extraterritorial rights. Resulted in Japanese resentment of the foreign nations and led them to modernizing their country.
Meiji era
The period of Japanese history from 1867-1912 during which the country was ruled by emperor Mutsuhito. Sent diplomats to Europe and North America to study Western ways. They modernized their government after the Germans, their army after the British, and their schools after America.
Sino- Japanese War
The sino- Japanese war was a battle between Japan and china that only lasted for a few months. It initiated when the Chinese broke their agreement with Japan that they wouldn’t send their troops into Korea. Japan won the war and gained a foothold in Manchuria, which led to the Russo- Japanese war.
Russo- Japanese war
A 1904-1905 conflict between Russia and Japan, sparked by the 2 countries efforts to dominate lands in Manchuria and Korea. Japan launched a surprise attack and drove Russian troops out of Korea and captured most of Russia’s Pacific fleet. Resulted in Japan gaining territory in Korea and Manchuria.
Annexation of Korea
In 1910, Japan officially took control over Korea. They were harsh rulers because they shut down the newspapers, took over their schools, took their land and refused to let Koreans run their own business. The Koreans resentment towards the Japanese helped create a strong Korean nationalist movement
