A policy in which a nation forces or encourages a subject people to adopt its institutions or customs. The French wanted African populations to adopt their cultures and be like the French. Resulted in African cultures becoming like the French.

A
A policy of treating subject people as if they were children, providing for their needs but not giving them rights. Europeans thought that Africans didn’t have the ability to handle the complex business of running a country. This resulted in direct control over African nations.
