Suez Canal
A human made waterway, which was opened in 1869, that connected the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea. It was built mainly with French money from private interest groups, using Egyptian labor. Put Egypt in a huge amount of debt.
Crimean War
A conflict, lasting from 1853-1856, in which the Ottoman empire, with the aid of Britain and France, halted Russian expansion in the region info the Black Sea. Britain and France wanted to prevent Russia from gaining control of additional Ottoman lands. First war where women established themselves as army nurses.
Geopolitics
An interest in or taking of land for its strategic location or products, played an important role in the fate of the Ottoman Empire.
World powers were attracted to its strategic location. Resulted in Russia waging war against the Ottomans.
