racism
the belief that one race is superior to others. Racism was expressed towards Africans when European nations went to conquer them. developed a hatred between africans and europeans.
Imperialism
A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, economically, or socially. Europeans used imperialism to establish colonies in Africa. This resulted in most parts of Africa being taken over by European nations.
social darwinism
the application of Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution and survival of the fittest to human societies- particularly as justification for Europe’s imperialistic actions. Europeans thought that it was a good excuse for invading and taking over the Africans land. It was a reflection of racism.
Berlin conference
a meeting in 1884-1885 at which representatives of European nations agreed upon rules for the colonization of Africa. They divided up the colonies. By 1914, only ethiopia and liberia remained free from european control.
Shaka
a zulu chief who used highly disciplined warriors and highly strategic military tactics to create a large centralized state. Shaka’s successors were unable to control the attacks of British invaders and the British took over.

Dutch colonist in South Africa. Gradually took Africans lands and established large farms. Began to move north to escape british

battle where the boers and british fought for a territory in south africa. many prisoners taken to concentration camps including Africans. Britain eventually won the war.
