28.2 Flashcards
Jet Stream
A narrow band of fast moving, high altitude air.
Coriolanus effect
The deflections of an object due to the Earth’s rotation
Air mass
A large volume of air with uniform moisture and temperature throughout.
Weather fronts
Air masses interact in zones
How many Jet streams are there in the world?
Four (two polar and two subtropical)
Pressure System
- Low-pressure system
- High-pressure system
The pressure system depends on the direction if airflow, which is do to the Coriolis effect
What is a low pressure system known as?
Also known as an cyclone, it is the opposite of an area of high pressure, or a anticyclone.
Which way does the air flow fro a low pressure system?
Because of Earth’s spin and the Coriolis Effect, winds of a low pressure system swirl counterclockwise north of the equator and clockwise south of the equator.
What are some results of low pressure system?
A low pressure system has lower pressure at its center than the areas around it. Winds blow towards the low pressure, and the air rises in the atmosphere where they meet. As the air rises, the water vapor within it condenses, forming clouds and often precipitation.
What is a high pressure system known as?
High (H)
Which way does it flow?
Counterclockwise
Where does the airflow go?
Away from the center
What is the result of a high pressure system?
Causes the air to sink, which results in clear skies.
What are the four weather fronts?
Cold warm stationary occluded
How is a cold front created?
Cold air is coming in which is forcing the warm air upward in a fast and chaotic manner.
