2.8 Flashcards
1
Q
how does a cell produce its own atp and why is this process necessary?
A
- process is called respiration
- it produces atp from organic compounds
- this is done because atp is immediately usable as an energy source anywhere in the cell for any process
2
Q
state the 2 types of cell respiration
A
- aerobic
- anaerobic
3
Q
describe aerobic respiration
A
- with oxygen
- glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
- c6h12o + o2 –> co2 + h2o
- lots of atp
4
Q
describe anaerobic respiration
A
- without oxygen
- humans: glucose –> lactate + carbon dioxide
- yeast: glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide
- little atp
5
Q
why might anaerobic respiration be better than aerobic respiration sometimes?
A
although anaerobic does not provide a lot of atp, it is very rapid and maximises the power of muscle contractions
6
Q
what is an instrument that can measure respiration?
A
respirometer
7
Q
how does the respirometer work?
A
- 2 sealed containers: one with an organism and one without
- both containers contian alkali balls to absorb co2 and prevent suffocation
- they are connected via a capillary tube with water
