2.7 - Disease & Cancer Flashcards
What are a 4 Examples of Cardiovascular Diseases?
- Coronary Heart Disease
- Heart Attacks
- Faulty Heart Valves
- Heart Failure
What are 4 Examples of Treatments for Cardiovascular Diseases?
- Stents
- Statins
- Replacement Valves
- Replacement Hearts
What is Coronary Heart Disease? [4]
- When the Coronary Arteries start to get Blocked by layers of Fatty Material.
- Causes the Lumen of the Arteries to become Narrower .
- Less Blood can flow through so less Oxygen reaches the Heart Muscles.
- Puts Strain on the Heart and potentially causes a Heart Attack.
What are the Two main Treatments for Coronary Heart Disease?
- Stents
- Statins
What is a Stent?
- An expandable tube we can put inside the arteries to hold them open.
- Ensures the blood can keep flowing.
What are 2 Advantages of Stents?
- Surgery is quick.
- They last a long time.
What are 2 Disadvantages of Stents?
- Surgery has Risks (Could Induce a Heart Attack or lead to Infection).
- Small Risk of Developing a Blood Clot near the Stent (Thrombosis).
What are Statins?
Medication that alters the Balance of Cholesterol in your Bloodstream.
What is Cholesterol?
A type of Lipid that comes in 2 different forms (HDL - Good, LDL - Bad).
What do Statins do?
Decrease the amount of LDL Cholesterol in our Blood & increase the amount of HDL Cholesterol.
What are 2 Disadvantages of Statins?
- They have to be taken regularly for years.
- Can cause side effects such as headaches and kidney failure.
What is the Role of the Valve?
To allow blood to flow in one direction only.
What are 2 Problems we can get with the Valves?
- Not enough blood being able to pass through.
- The valve doesn’t close properly anymore.
