Q

Examples of considerations for safety in commercial manufacture

A
  1. The duration of the job -> will workers be carrying out the same task -> safety implications from boredom or repetitive strain injury
  2. What could be controlled before manufacturing starts
  3. Is there PPE and systems to maintain and replace
  4. Correct signage
  5. Is there emergency equipment (e.g first aid kits and fire extinguishers)

Q

What is a proof of concept prototype?

A

Shows the key functionality and main technical aspects of the design. Not intended to look like the final product but will be a functional model which makes use of existing ‘off the shelf components. Uses production grade materials.

Q

What is a production prototype?

A

Gives a presentation of how the mass-produced would look and shows how the product would function. Off the shelf parts may still be used but mostly made from bespoke parts. Materials close to production grade as possible. Used to assess any alterations may be required prior to mass production.

What is mass production?

A

Large quantities of the same standard or component are made. Utilises the automation of manufacturing processes wherever possible and may make the extensive use of dedicated machinery as well as CNC. Doesn’t require highly skilled workers.
