2.4 Design Processes Flashcards
Define the design process?
A system that organises how a prototype or a product is developed
What can a design brief include?
A description of the problem, images and details of the context, an explanation of why existing products are not suitable for the user and details of the client group, an outline of the intended product and key areas of focus.
What is primary research useful for?
Identify the weaknesses of existing products and potential areas for improvement.
What is a Izod impact test and what is it used for?
A heavy pendulum is striked against a test ppiece. The amount of energy absorbed is recorded and this allows designers to compare toughness of materials.
What is an abrasion test and what is it used for?
A sample material is fixed against a wooden block and a second block is covered in glass paper. The two blocks are rubbed together to determine the wear on the sample material.
Examples of forms of investigations
Using internet forums to gain public opinion, analysis of anthropometric data, consideration of relevant social, moral and environmental factors.
What do designers use to inspire their ideas?
Mood boards (images), inspiration boxes (materials) and job bags (cuttings from newspapers, magazines, sketches etc..)
What is the SCAMPER technique?
Substitute - Change materials, components, finshes…
Combine - Mix ideas together
Adapt - Alter the design
Modify - Change the shape and size of the design
Put it to another use - is there alternative use for the the design?
Eliminate - remove and reduce parts (simplify design)
Reverse - turn the design upside down or inside out
What is the 4 x 4 Design activity technique?
Introduced by the D and T association, one person draws design in centre of page with four boxes surrounding it, four people develop design from the one before.
What is the thinking hat technique?
Each person takes a different way of looking at the design:
What is a design specification
A list of requirements the design must meet. Typical elements are ACCESS FM
What is modelling and why is it used?
Used to communicate aesthetics, function, size and proportions beforre ommitting to using more expensive materials.
Why is planning essential for commercial manufacture?
To reduce idle time by planning the sequence of operations for maximum efficiency (could be done by using a flow chart).
What are some examples of evaluation and testing in the design process?
Product disassembly, gaining client opinions, producing 3D cad drawings. Test materials and construction methods evaluation their suitability.
What is collaborative working?
Working with people with different areas of expertise and specialist knowledge.
