26 27 lecture Flashcards
Endergonic
starts with low energy goes to high energy (reactants- low energy, Products- High energy) not spon
Exergonic
starts with high energy goes to low energy (reactants-high energy, products-low energy)

Catabolism
Break down pathways. Large molecules are broken down into smaller molecules
Anabolism
Building Pathways. Large molecules are built from smaller molecules
Oxidation
A substance loses electrons
Reduction
A substance gains electrons,
Reduction potential
Measures how strongly electrons are attracted to a molecule - electronegativity
Glycolysis
Overall glucose is oxidized into two molecules of pyruvate, 2 atp used, 4 atp made, 2 Nad+ molecules reduced to nadh, occurs in the cytosol, does not require energy
Pyruvate Oxidation
Pyruvate is oxidized into Acetyl CoA, no atp is produced or used, 2 molecules of NAD+ are reduced to NADH, occurs in the mitochondria, pyruvate enters the mitochondria via active transport, gives of 2 molecules of C02
Citric Acid Cycle
Citric acid cycle continues the oxidation of glyucose (Starting from acetyl CoA), Generates most of the NADH and FADH2, releases C02
