2.5 Study Guide Flashcards
Definition of Cohesion
Hydrogen bonding between two water molecules (water to water attraction)
-creates surface tension
Definition of Adhesion
Hydrogen bonding between water and other substance (water to other attraction)
- capillary attraction
Definition of Solvent
A solvent is what dissolves a solute which creates solutions.
Solvent= water
Definition of Specific Heat
the amount of energy it takes to heat up 1 gram of a substance by 1* Celsius- takes more energy to heat up
Definition of Heat of Vaporization
Energy it takes for 1 gram of water to evaporate
What are the five properties of water?
- Cohesion and Adhesion
- Water is the solvent of life
- The special case of ice
- High Specific Heat
- Heat of Vaporization
How does waters polarity give it its properties
Its properties allow it to dissolve other polar substances very easily.
Why is each property important to living things?
To help support the life processes of living things. All life occurs in water, both inside and outside of the cell. Water vaporization helps regulate body temperature, Its specific heat helps resist temperature changes, it is a solvent, and can stick and bond to itself and other objects.
