2.5 - Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the three main functions of the skeletal system?
Movement, support, protection
How do bones participate in movement of the body?
Bones are joined to other bones by ligaments, which give the joints stability and allow movement. Bones that are joined together in this way and are involved in movement are called long bones. Muscles are attached to these bones by tendons. Muscles pulling on bones cause us to move.
What is a joint?
A place where two or more bones meet
What does the cartilage do?
Protects bones and avoids friction
What are the two type of joints?
Hinge and ball and socket.
Where are hinge joints located?
Knee and elbow
Where are ball and socket joints located?
Hip and shoulder
What type of movement occurs at hinge joints?
Flexion and Extension
What type of movement occurs at ball and socket joints?
Flexion, Extension, Rotation, Abduction, Adduction
What happens in flexion?
The angle at the joint gets smaller
What happens in extension?
The angle at the joint gets bigger
What happens in abduction?
A limb moves away from the body
What happens in adduction?
A limb is brought towards the body
What happens in rotation?
Joint is moved in a circular action
What is an example of flexion in sport?
Bending the knees before jumping in basketball
What is an example of extension in sport?
Straightening the leg when kicking a ball in football
What is an example of abduction in sport?
In circuit training, doing astride jumps over and onto a bench• abduction is when you have your legs and arms wide.
What is an example of adduction in sport?
In circuit training, during astride jumps
What is an example of rotation in sport?
Bowling in cricket
How does exercise effect the skeletal system?
Exercise helps to increase bone density, making bones stronger and more able to withstand greater forces or more frequent training.
Exercise strengthens ligaments (which join bone to bone) and tendons [which join muscles to bone]. Injuries to ligaments and tendons take a long time to repair
What is osteoporosis?
A debilitating condition of the bones, which can result in them breaking more easily. It is mostly associated with older people because over time bones become lighter and their strength is reduced.
How can you prevent osteoporosis and prevent it from getting worse?
Weight bearing exercises
What are the four types of fractures?
Compound, greenstick, simple and stress
Describe a compound fracture.
Broken bone comes through skin
