2.4 - Muscular System Flashcards
What is isometric contraction?
When the muscle contracts but stays in a fixed position.
What is isotonic contraction?
Muscle contraction that results in limb movement.
What attaches muscles to bones?
Tendons
What happens in an antagonistic pair?
When one muscle contracts the other relaxes
Name two antagonistic pairs in the body.
Biceps and Triceps, Hamstring and quadriceps
What action does the deltoid produce?
Abducts [takes away] the upper arm from the body e.g. serving in tennis when the arm goes above the head
What action does the trapezius produce?
Rotates the shoulder blades (and scapular) backwards e.g. rowing
What action does the latissimus dorsi produce?
Rotates upper arm at the shoulders e.g. swimming butterfly
What action does the pectoral muscle produce?
Adducts the arm e.g. swimming front crawl
What action do the abdominal muscles produce?
Flexes and rotates trunk e.g. rowing
What action do the biceps produce?
Flexes arm at the elbow e.g. bending the arm to throw a cricket ball
What action do the triceps produce?
Extends arm at the elbow e.g. straightening the arm to throw a cricket ball
What action does the gluteus maximus produce?
Extends the upper leg e.g. running
What action do the quadriceps produce?
Extends the leg at the knee e.g. kicking a football
What action do hamstrings the produce?
Flexes the leg at the knee e.g. sprinting
