2.4.1 Fiber Optic Cable Flashcards
Distribution Frame (Patch Panel):
Definition: A passive hardware assembly used to terminate network cables, allowing for easy connection and re-routing of circuits via patch cords. Provides organization, flexibility, and simplified troubleshooting. Network+ focuses on the practical benefits.
- Duplex Fiber:
Definition: A fiber optic communication method that uses two strands: one for transmitting (Tx) data and one for receiving (Rx) data.
- Fiber Optic Polarity (A to B):
Definition: The correct alignment of Tx and Rx connections in a fiber link. Requires an odd number of crossovers to ensure proper communication. Mismatched polarity leads to no signal.
UPC (Ultra Physical Contact)
Fiber connector finish with a polished, slightly curved surface. Blue connector (typically).
APC (Angled Physical Contact):
Fiber connector finish with an angled polish for tighter connection and reduced back reflection. Green connector (typically). Important: Do not mix UPC and APC connectors. Network+ expects you to know they’re incompatible.
- Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) vs. Multimode Fiber (MMF):
SMF Definition: Fiber optic cable designed for long-distance communication and higher bandwidth. Yellow jacket.
MMF Definition: Fiber optic cable generally used for shorter distances. Orange or Aqua jacket. (Know the OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4 variations are multimode). Network+ level understanding does not usually require deep dives into the different multimode types beyond their color codes.
Multi Fiber Connector
Connector connecting multiple optical fibers simultaneously.
