2.3.4 Structured Cable Intallation Flashcards
What is a Structured Cable?
An organized cabling system for data/voice/video, providing a reliable network. Think of it as the ‘road network’ for your data.
What is a Telecommunications Closet?
Central hub for network cables & equipment. The ‘city center’ of your network.
What is a Work Area?
Where user devices connect to the network. Individual ‘buildings’ connected to the road network.
What is a Cable Run?
The path a cable takes. The ‘road’ connecting the city center to a building.
What is a Patch Panel?
A board in the telecommunications closet where all the cables from the work areas connect. Allows for easy re-routing and management. Think of it like a switchboard.
What is a Wall Jack?
The connector on the wall where you plug in your device. The ‘door’ to connect to the building.
What is a Patch Cord?
Short cable connecting devices to wall jacks or the patch panel to equipment. Like the ‘driveway’ connecting your device to the wider network.
What does Pulling Cable mean?
The act of physically running the cable.
What is a Drop in cabling?
Running the cable down from the ceiling to the wall jack.
What is a Service Loop?
Extra cable left at the ends for flexibility (reconnections/repairs). Always leave some!
What is an RJ45 Connector?
The standard plug on Ethernet cables.
What is Solid Core Cable?
Cable with single, solid wires, for long runs.
What is Stranded Cable?
Cable with multi-strand wires, flexible, for patch cords.
What is a Cable Stripper?
Tool for safely removing the cable’s outer jacket. Get a good one!
What is Attenuation?
Signal loss over distance. Keep cable runs within limits!
What is Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)?
Noise that can disrupt data. Avoid power cables.
Entrance Facility
Marks where external cabling enters a building and connects to the internal network.
Demarcation Point
The exact point where responsibility shifts from the service provider to the building owner.
