2.4 Living Ocean Ecosystems Flashcards
Land transitions to oceans are
NOT leading to unique ecosystems
low-lying vs highlying transitions
Land transitions of
- Maritimes
- west coast
- Newfoundland
- artic
- M and A low-lying (continental shelf)
- N fijords
- WC mountants meet sea
Estuaries
The transition from salt ocean water to fresh river water
-transisiotn aka brackish water
-includes deltas
-high bio diversity
ex//st laurence, Makenzie delta, marmishi, fraser delta, skeena
coastal wetlands
includes bogs, fens, swamps and marshes
-small number of these in cnd
flood control and key for anadromous fish
sea grass beds
submerged coastal wetlands
- vascular plants in the ground (helps protect area)
- vital LC of living organism here
- includes kelp forests (functional species, much food and shelter for ecosystem)
beaches & sandunes
common in maritimes
- not ecologicly diverse
=disrupted due to beach tourism and homes
Artic
Mostly Ice not land land
- vurnable to CC, melts lets in more h2o, more light = more photosynthesis = change in food web
-not a lot of photosynthesis, low producers
little resilience, maintains equilibrium
much fana is migratory
