2.4 group 7 - the halogens Flashcards
Halogens def
The elements that are found in group 7 of the periodic table
What are the halogens?
A group of toxic non-metals that have coloured vapours
What are the physical properties of halogens?
- low melting and boiling points
- poor conductors of heat and electricity
Do the melting and boiling points increase or decrease going down the group?
Increase
How do halogens exist as elements
As molecules made up of pairs of atoms, called diatomic molecules. The atoms in each pair are joined to each other by a covalent bond
Do halogens lose or gain electrons when they react?
They gain one electron to achieve the stable electronic structure of a noble gas
What happens when halogens react with other non-metals?
They gain an extra electron by sharing a pair of electrons with another atom
Do halogens get more or less reactive going down the group
Less
How do halogens react with metals?
They gain a single electron to five them a stable arrangement of electrons and form ions with a 1- charge (ionic compounds)
How can you test to check the reactivity of halogens?
Using the following rule:
A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive halogen from solutions of its salts
