1.1 Atomic structure Flashcards
use physical flashcards for diagrams
Def of atom
Smallest part of an element that can still be recognised as that element. All substances are made up of atoms
Def of element
A substance made up of only one type of atom. Cannot be broken down into any simpler substance.
Do elements have the same properties
Different
What is in the periodic table
elements
What is a group in the periodic table
The vertical column in the periodic table which contain elements with similar chemical properties
What is the ‘staircase’
Distinguishes the metals on the left and the non-metals on the right.
Describe a compound
A substance made when two or more elements are chemically bonded together. Most compounds consist of two or more different types of atom held tightly.
Describe structure of atom
They are made up of a tiny central nucleus with electrons orbiting around it
Def of molecule
A group of two or more atoms bonded together
Def of a mixture
When some elements or compounds are mixed together, do not react. Not a ure substance
Why models such as atoms are useful in science
To help people understand what the structure looks like
Why have ideas about atoms changed over time
Technology helped and changed views
Name the three sub-atomic particles and outline where each is found within an atom
Electron - Orbiting around nucleus
Neutrons- Nucleus of an atom
Proton - Nucleus of atom
