Πρὸς δὲ τούτοις οἱ νέοι μοι <οἱ> ἐπακολουθοῦντες, οἷς μάλιστα σχολή ἐστιν, οἱ τῶν πλουσιωτάτων, αὐτόματοι, χαίρουσιν ἀκούοντες ἐξεταζομένων τῶν ἀνθρώπων, | καὶ αὐτοὶ πολλάκις ἐμὲ μιμοῦνται, εἶτα ἐπιχειροῦσιν ἄλλους ἐξετάζειν· κἄπειτα οἶμαι εὑρίσκουσι πολλὴν ἀφθονίαν οἰομένων μὲν εἰδέναι τι ἀνθρώπων, εἰδότων δὲ ὀλίγα ἢ οὐδέν.</οἱ>
In addition to these things, young men, who have plenty of leisure and are the sons of the wealthiest men, follow me closely of their own accord, rejoicing to hear hatred against their fellow men, and they imitate me often, and so attempt to question others, and so I know that they find an abundance of men who believe that they know something while knowing almost nothing.
ἐντεῦθεν οὖν οἱ ὑπ’ αὐτῶν ἐξεταζόμενοι ἐμοὶ ὀργίζονται, οὐχ αὑτοῖς, καὶ λέγουσιν ὡς Σωκράτης τίς ἐστι μιαρώτατος καὶ διαφθείρει τοὺς νέους· καὶ ἐπειδάν τις αὐτοὺς ἐρωτᾷ ὅτι ποιῶν καὶ ὅτι διδάσκων, ἔχουσι μὲν οὐδὲν εἰπεῖν ἀλλ’ ἀγνοοῦσιν, ἵνα δὲ μὴ δοκῶσιν ἀπορεῖν, | τὰ κατὰ πάντων τῶν φιλοσοφούντων πρόχειρα ταῦτα λέγουσιν, ὅτι “τὰ μετέωρα καὶ τὰ ὑπὸ γῆς” καὶ “θεοὺς μὴ νομίζειν” καὶ “τὸν ἥττω λόγον κρείττω ποιεῖν.”
And so hence, those who are interrogated by them hate me, not them, and say that a certain Socrates is the most defiled man and corrupts the youth. And whenever someone asks them by doing what and by teaching what, they have nothing to say and don’t know, and so in order not to seem at a loss, they say appropriate things, according to those who love philosophy, that ‘the things of the air and by the ground’ and ‘he does not recognise the gods’ and ‘he makes weaker arguments stronger’

For I know that they would not wish to say the truth, that they are obvious in pretending to know while knowing nothing. And so, since I know they love honour and are excessive and numerous, and speak eagerly and persuasively about me, and they have filled your ears, for a long time now, with their excessive slander. and on account of this, Melatos and Anytus and Lycon attacked me, Melatos was angry on behalf of the poets, An on behalf of the demos and Lycon on behalf of the politicians. Consequentially, the very thing which I said at the beginning, I would be amazed if I am able to remove this slander, which became so great, from you in so short a time.
ταῦτ’ ἔστιν ὑμῖν, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, τἀληθῆ, | καὶ ὑμᾶς οὔτε μέγα οὔτε μικρὸν ἀποκρυψάμενος ἐγὼ λέγω οὐδ’ ὑποστειλάμενος. καίτοι οἶδα σχεδὸν ὅτι αὐτοῖς τούτοις ἀπεχθάνομαι, ὃ καὶ τεκμήριον ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγω καὶ ὅτι αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ διαβολὴ ἡ ἐμὴ καὶ τὰ αἴτια ταῦτά ἐστιν. καὶ ἐάντε νῦν ἐάντε αὖθις ζητήσητε ταῦτα, οὕτως εὑρήσετe.
This is the truth which I tell you, and I have not hidden anything either great or small from you or holding anything back. I almost know that I am hated because of these men, it is a sign that I speak the truth and that this is slander against me and this is the reasons. And whether you go searching now or later, you will find it in this way
Περὶ μὲν οὖν ὧν οἱ πρῶτοί μου κατήγοροι κατηγόρουν αὕτη ἔστω ἱκανὴ ἀπολογία πρὸς ὑμᾶς· πρὸς δὲ Μέλητον | τὸν ἀγαθὸν καὶ φιλόπολιν, ὥς φησι, καὶ τοὺς ὑστέρους μετὰ ταῦτα πειράσομαι ἀπολογήσασθαι. αὖθις γὰρ δή, ὥσπερ ἑτέρων τούτων ὄντων κατηγόρων, λάβωμεν αὖ τὴν τούτων ἀντωμοσίαν. ἔχει δέ πως ὧδε· Σωκράτη φησὶν ἀδικεῖν τούς τε νέους διαφθείροντα καὶ θεοὺς οὓς ἡ πόλις νομίζει οὐ νομίζοντα, ἕτερα δὲ δαιμόνια καινά. τὸ μὲν δὴ ἔγκλημα τοιοῦτόν ἐστιν· τούτου δὲ τοῦ ἐγκλήματος ἓν ἕκαστον ἐξετάσωμεν.
Let this be a sufficient defence to you concerning those first accusations made against me. I will try to make my defence against Melatos, the good and city loving man, so he says, and after this, the following accusers. For indeed, let us take up their oath again, as if they were other accusers. In some way, it stands like this – it is said that Socrates sins through corrupting the youth, and he does not recognise the gods which the city knows, but new other deities. The charge is of this sort, but let us thoroughly examine each of the charges in turn.
Φησὶ γὰρ δὴ τοὺς νέους ἀδικεῖν με διαφθείροντα. | ἐγὼ δέ γε, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, ἀδικεῖν φημι Μέλητον, ὅτι σπουδῇ χαριεντίζεται, ῥᾳδίως εἰς ἀγῶνα καθιστὰς ἀνθρώπους, περὶ πραγμάτων προσποιούμενος σπουδάζειν καὶ κήδεσθαι ὧν οὐδὲν τούτῳ πώποτε ἐμέλησεν· ὡς δὲ τοῦτο οὕτως ἔχει, πειράσομαι καὶ ὑμῖν ἐπιδεῖξαι.
For it is said that I sin and corrupt the youths. But I say, gentlemen, that Melatos has wronged, that he jests in earnest, easily putting men down into the assembly (lightly brings them to trial), pretending to busy himself about matters troubled himself about matters which were never a concern to him before now. I will try to prove to you that it is so.
