So firstly, it is fair for me to defend myself, gentlemen, against the first lies that have been spoken against me and my first accusers, then against the later accusations and accusers. For my many accusers have, by this time, brought these things before you, and spoken nothing truthful, whom I’m more afraid of than those around Anytus, although they are terrible. But those men are more terrible, gentlemen, than those who took many of you in hand from childhood and persuaded you and accused me of nothing very true, saying that there is a certain Socrates, a sophist man, who, as a thinker, investigated all the things of the air and things by land, and made weaker arguments stronger.

These men, gentlemen, who spread these rumours, are my terrible accusers, for those who hear them believe that those who seek these things do not believe gods. Secondly, there are many of these accusers and have already been making these chargers for a long time, and still speaking to you in an age which you were more trusting, some of you being children and others being youths, they were simply charging an absent person, with no one to make a defence. But what is absurd of all is that it is not possible to know and say their names, unless you happen to be a comic poet.

How many of you were persuaded by those using ill-will and slander, and those who persuade others also persuade themselves, all of them are the most difficult, it is impossible to bring any of them here to court and cross examine. Instead, it is necessary to simply defend yourself as if you’re shadowboxing and questioning with no one to answer. Therefore, you should deem worthy, as I argue, that there are two sets of people accusing me, some accuse me just now, the others from long ago, whom I am talking about, and you should expect that, firstly, I need to defend myself against these people, for you have heard from them more recently than these more recent ones.

A

Very good then, a defence must be made, gentlemen, and an attempt to remove the slander from you all which you acquired over a long time in such a small amount of time. Now I wish it to happen in this way, if it is better for you and for me, and to succeed in my defence. Indeed, I know that it is difficult and it does not escape me what sort of a task this is. Nevertheless, let this go whatever way it pleases gods, for I must obey the laws and make my defence.

ποιῆσαι - to do something more, ‘succeed’
