2.3 Vocabulary Flashcards
Molecule
Two or more atoms joined together by a bond.
Element
The simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties. An element cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. It is made up of one or more atoms which can not be destroyed. (they are indestructible)
Compound
Two or more different atoms joined together by a bond.
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that retains its identity in a chemical reaction. They cannot be changed by chemical (acid, fire, nuclear bomb) or physical means (filtration, magnets, boiling, or hitting with an axe).
Subatomic Particles
Are particles which are smaller than an atom because they make up the atom. They include protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Nucleus
The tiny, dense central portion of an atom, composed of protons and neutrons. This is the portion of the atoms with the greatest mass.
Bond
A mutualattractionbetweentwoatoms, usually caused byinteractions between electrons. This force of attraction result in the secure joining of the two atoms.
Lewis Structure
Is a representation of molecules and compounds. Chemical symbols and solid lines are used to represent bonds between atoms. This representation show you a molecules composition (meaning what atoms it possesses) and connectivity (meaning which atoms are bonded to each other).
Ball and Stick Model
Is a representation of molecules and compounds which can take the form of drawings on a page or a 3D model which can be handled. Similar to Lewis Structures ball and stick models use chemical symbols and solid lines to represent bonds between atoms. This representation show you a molecules composition (meaning what atoms it possesses) and connectivity (meaning which atoms are bonded to each other). Unlike Lewis structures, ball and stick models, show you use colored balls (with or without a chemical symbol) to represent its atoms.
Chemical Symbol
A one or two letter representation of an element based off of the Latin name for the element. The first letter is always capitalized and the second letter is always lowercase.
Periodic Table
An arrangement of elements in which the elements are separated into groups based on a set of repeating properties.
