2.3 - Utility Software Flashcards
What is utility software?
Utility software analyses, configures, optimises, or maintains a system.
What does utility software help with?
It helps the system run basically and backs up files, folders, and documents.
What is backup software?
Backup software creates a copy of data which is made in case something happens to the original.
Example: Full backup - faster restore time.
What are the limitations of backups?
If changes aren’t backed up, you might restore a version you don’t want. Full backups can slow down networks and backup data can be accessed through hacking.
What is incremental backup?
Incremental backup will only backup changes, while full backup makes a brand new copy of every single file.
What does antivirus software do?
Antivirus software detects, scans, and removes malware on a computer.
What are the advantages of antivirus software?
It removes all malware, not just viruses, and protects against spam emails and spyware.
What are the disadvantages of antivirus software?
If you’re not updating your database, it will leave you vulnerable, and not all detection methods are used.
What is compression software?
Compression software reduces file sizes.
What are the benefits of compression software?
Smaller files mean less storage space is used, takes less time to download/upload files, and increases reading and writing time to the system.
What are the drawbacks of compression software?
Heavily compressing data can reduce the quality of videos/photos, and compressed files must be uncompressed to be accessed.
What is defragmentation?
Defragmentation rearranges files on the disc for continuous sequencing to access them quicker.
What are the benefits of defragmentation?
Data is not scattered, which speeds up the system and reduces write times to the disk for faster data retrieval.
