Mind Readers Background
(1) Polygraphs are used to detect lies by measuring respiration and heart rate.
(2) An fMRI is usually used for medical diagnoses and can see which areas of the brain are active.
Mind Readers Theory
If you are telling the truth, only one area of the brain will light up (more blood flow and glucose) - the memory. If you are telling a lie, other areas of the brain will light up - the memory and the lie that you tell. The fMRI can thus be used as a lie detector.
Mind Readers Method and Results (4 things)
(1) Participants were given playing cards. Half got 20$ and were told to lie about the card.
(2) Half were told they needed to tell the truth about the card.
(3) Blood flow and glucose measured
(4) Two areas of the brain lit up when people were lying, one area of the brain lit up when people were telling the truth.
Mind Readers Significance (2 things)
(1) The fMRI is a better lie detector than a polygraph.
(2) We can now understand the specialization of the human brain involved in lying/truth.
Mind Readers Legacy (3 things)
(1) The fMRI can be used for things other than medical diagnoses.
(2) The fMRI has identified the regions of the brains of schizophrenics that are responsible for their loss of rational thinking.
(3) Researchers used an fMRI machine to reconstruct photos what the pictures looked like that participants were shown before the scan.
