2.3 Proteins Flashcards
Protein?
Large biomolecules (complex polymer) consisting of one or more chains of amino acids.
Function of protein?
Catalyzing reactions, replicating DNA and transporting molecules.
What is protein composed of?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulfur.
Where is protein found?
Meat, cheese, eggs, and nuts.
What are the three parts of a protein?
Amino acids, peptide bond, polypeptide.
What is an amino acid?
Components of a protein are monomers called amino acids. Composed of a central carbon atom bonded to a hydrogen atom, an amino group and a carboxyl group and a variable group.
Polypeptides?
Amino acids are linked into chains called polypeptides.
Peptide bonds?
Amino acids form covalent bonds, called a peptide bond with each other.
How many amino acids are there and what determines their function?
20, the order determines their function. They only differ in their side group “R.”
What is the carboxyl group?
-COOH
What is the amino group?
(-NH little 2)
Variable group?
(-R)
