3 reasons prisons work??
Token economics encourages good behaviour - develops when in society ( rehab )
Acts as a deterent ( deterence )
Cannot reazch communty so cannot offend ( protection )
3 ways prisons dont work??
Corruption - 165 dismissed staff - no rehab
Few support programmes - only £76 when released means will reoffend ( protection )
Overpopulated - short sentence + early release no deterrent
What is PFI??
Private Finance Initiative. A PFI prison is one which is not run by the Prison Service, but instead by a private company who wins a contract from the government to do so
2 advantages for community sentences??
Repaying society 40 -300 hours ( reparation )
Drug + Alcohol treatment requirements ( rehab )
2 disadvantages of community sentences??
Not protecting community by removing offenders
No rehab as not as harsh as prison
2 advantages of fines??
Reparation - repaying victim
Deterence as highest level is unlimited
2 disadvantages of fines??
No reform as they pay then are free
Light punishment - low retribution as they may be wealthy so its not really affecting them for their crime
