2.3 Histology: Male Reproductive Flashcards
Scrotum:
The bag of skin that holds and helps to protect the testicles
Prepuce:
technical term for foreskin, lies over the glans penis
what happens to the Bulbus glandis when a dog becomes aroused?
When a dog becomes aroused, the bulbus glandis swell with blood, creating two readily visible bumps.
Spermatic cord:
is a structure composed of the testicular artery and veins that form the pampiniform plexus, lymphatics and the deferent duct
The septa extends from ?
the tunica albuginea across the testis dividing it into lobules
The lobules are composed of
convoluted seminiferous tubules
PAS stain:
PAS is a stain which generally labels polysaccharides magenta (pink-purple). This means it particularly highlights the basement membrane around the tubule.
Why is the basement membrane important?
It provides a partial barrier around the tubule, and provides the substrate on which Sertoli cells attach
What is secreted by the Leydig cells?
testosterone
- These cells have a ‘foamy’ appearance due to the presence of lipid droplets and granules.
Can you explain the appearance of tubules and cells from your knowledge of the architecture of the organ?
Seminiferous tubules are surrounded by lymph spaces in the interstitium and Leydig cells. These tubules are lined by Sertoli cells.
Germ cells differentiate and mature in compartments between the Sertoli cells.
