2.3 Cell Division Flashcards
What is the purpose of the cell cycle?
Growth and repair of tissues
What does DNA in the cell look like during interphase?
Not in chromosomes so can’t be seen
What happens to chromosomes during interphase?
Replication
What are “sister chromatids”?
Two indentical chromosomes joined at the centromere
What happens to chromosomes during prophase?
Condensed into chromosomes
What happens to chromosomes during metaphase?
Line up down equator/centre of cell
What happens to chromosomes during anaphase?
Spindle fibres pull sister chromatids to opposite poles
What happens to chromosomes during telophase?
Nucleus reforms around them
What happens at the end of telophase?
Cytokinesis
What is cytokenesis?
Split cytoplasm and cell membrane
Why does targetting spindle fibre formation work as a chemotherapy drug?
Cancer cells divide faster than normal cells so will affect them more
What happens if spindle fibres cannot be formed?
Anaphase cannot occur
Why is the tip of roots used to see mitosis in cells?
Its where cells are dividing/doing mitosis
Give examples of control variables in the root tip squash practical.
Time of day
Age of garlic
Species of garlic
Water availability
Temperature
Why is the coverslip pushed down firmly in the root tip squash practical?
Make cell sample thinner
Only want one layer of cells
