1.2 Biological Molecules: Lipids Flashcards
What is a triglyceride?
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acid tails
What reactions form a triglyceride?
Condensation
What bonds are found in triglycerides?
Ester
What is an unsaturated triglyceride?
There are double carbon-carbon bonds present in fatty acids
What is a saturated triglyceride?
There are no double carbon-carbon bonds present in fatty acids
What test is done for the presence of a triglyceride?
Shake with ethanol and add water
Clear to milky white precipitate if fats are present
What is a phospholipid?
Glycerol, 2 fatty acid tails and a phosphate
How do phospholipids react in water?
Form micelles/bilayer
What bonding is found in a phospholipid?
Ester
What molecule do phospholipids contain that triglycerides do not?
Phosphate
Are triglycerides hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophobic
Are phospholipids hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophilic phosphate heads and hydrophobic fatty acid tails
What are the similarities between phospholipids and triglycerides?
Can both be saturated/unsaturated
Both contain glycerol
