2.2.10 - experimenter effects, demand characteristics and control issues Flashcards
what are experimenter effects?
the ways an experimenter may influence the outcome of an experiment by their actions or mere presence
what is the Hawthorne effect?
when the presence of a researcher affects performance in a task
what are demand characteristics?
when the effect of the experimenter causes pps to alter their behaviour to meet the real or imagined expectations of the experimenter
what is standardisation?
making an experiment the same experience for all pps
what are standardised instructions?
a set of instructions given to all pps which eliminate experimenter effects as there is no potential for the experimenter to give verbal or non-verbal cues
what is a single-blind procedure?
when pps are unaware of the aim of a study so it doesn’t affect how they perform
what is a double-blind procedure?
when neither the pp or researcher knows the aim of a study, to eliminate experimenter effects.
