2.2 The Synthesis and Transport of Proteins iv The Secretory Pathway Flashcards
Where are secreted proteins translated?
On ribosomes on the RER
Once secreted proteins are translated where do they go?
They enter the lumen of the RER
Two examples of secreted proteins
Digestive enzymes and peptide hormones
How are proteins secreted from a cell?
The proteins move through the Golgi apparatus and are then packaged into secretory vesicles.
These vesicles move to and fuse with the plasma membrane, releasing the proteins out of the cell
How do the proteins that have been synthesised as inactive precursors become active proteins?
Proteolytic cleavage
What is proteolytic cleavage?
A type of post- translational modification
Example of a protein that requires proteolytic cleavage to become active
Digestive enzymes
