22: Peripheral Nerve Disorders Flashcards
onion bulbs on histo
concentric layers of schwann cytoplasm and redundant BM surrounding thinly myelinated axons
major peripheral neuropathy that involves autonomic nerves too
diabetic neuropathy
what do thin unmyelinated vs thick myelinated nerve fibers tend to carry?
- thin unmyelinated: autonomics, pain, temp
2. large with thick myelin: light touch, motor signals
mononeuritis multiplex
several nerves damaged in a haphazard fashion
common cause of mononeuritis multiplex
vasculitis
polyradiculoneuropathy
peripheral nerve & nerve roots affected -> diffuse symmetric in prox and distal parts of body
POEMS
polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes (occurs in malignancy)
traumatic neuroma
nerve damaged -> regenerates slowly -> axons grow in misalignment and form small bundles of axons in random orientation
