2.2 - Network Device Configuration Flashcards

1
Q

What is a Hub? What does it do?

A

A multipoint repeater that sends the data it receives to all other ports on the device. Poor scalability (high collisions) and runs on half-duplex.

Q

What is a bridge? How does it work?

A

A layer 2 device that connects dissimilar topologies like wireless to ethernet, or to segment a larger network into smaller ones to reduce collisions. It utilizes MAC addresses and software to direct network traffic.

Q

What is a switch?

A

A layer 2 device that can eliminate collisions and speed up traffic. Operate in full-duplex mode. Uses MAC addresses to send data to the proper recipient.

Q

What is a router? How does it work?

A

A router uses IP addresses to direct traffic. Can also manage traffic within subnets and VLANs. They are the backbone of the internet. They can determine the best path and reroute data around failures or congestion. They use an ACL (Access Control List) to define traffic behavior.

Q

What is a modem? How does it work?

A

Modems perform the functions of translating a signal from different formats. Modulation when sending, demodulation when receiving.

Q

What is a firewall? How does it work?

A

A firewall can be hardware or software. Hardware firewalls are called network-based firewalls. A software firewall is called a host-based firewall. A standard firewall filters packets on layer 4.
