2.1.4 - Enzymes Flashcards
enzymes are biological catalysts. what does that mean
they speed up reactions in living organisms
what is an intracellular enzyme
an enzyme found inside the cell
what is an example of an intracellular enzyme
catalase
what does catalase do
an intracellular enzyme that binds to hydrogen peroxide and speeds up the reaction breaking it into water and oxygen
what is an extracellular enzyme
an enzyme found outside a cell
example of an extracellular enzyme
amylase/ trypsin
where is amylase produced
the pancreas and it is released into the small intestine
what does amylase do
catalyses the breakdown of starch into maltose which is then broken down further into glucose and absorbed into the bloodstream
what does trypsin do
helps break down proteins into peptides
what happens after trypsin breaks down proteins into peptides
other enzymes break the peptides into amino acids which are then absorbed into the bloodstream
