2.1.2 Robotics Flashcards
What is a robot
A robot is a machine that is programmable by a computer
- is capable of carrying out a complex series of actions
automatically - can be guided by an external control device, or the
control may be embedded within - may be constructed to evoke human form, but most
robots are task-performing machines
Advantages of using robotics in a variety of scenarios
More consistent / better quality
Cost-effectiveness / lower labour costs
Increased productivity
Work in dangerous environments
Disadvantages of using robotics in a variety of scenarios
High initial costs
Effects on employment / potential job losses
Employment of skilled staff
What are the main components of a robotic system
- Central Processing Unit
- Sensors
- Actuators
- End-Effectors
- Power Supply
- A Program
What are the concerns of individuals with the development of robots
- Crisis decision making
- Fear of replacement
- Social isolation
What can statics robots be used in
Manufacturing cars and in general manufacturing facilites
What can virtual robots be used in
bots in phone calls etc
What are the types of programming used for robots
Online:
* Teach Pendant Programming (Drive Through)
* Teach by Example (Lead Through)
Offline:
* Graphical-offline programming (simulation)
What are the unintended consequences of the development of robots
Decreased patience and willingness to struggle
* Removal of unskilled jobs
* Decreased connection to nature
* Less care for personal health
* Lack of accountability
* Decline in the belief in free will
List the 3 Asimov lows
First Law – A robot may not injure a human being or,
through inaction, allow a human being to come to
harm.
- Second Law – A robot must obey the orders given it
by human beings except where such orders would
conflict with the First Law. - Third Law – A robot must protect its own existence
as long as such protection does not conflict with the
First or Second Law
Describe the teaching pendant
A Teach Pendant device is used to program an industrial robot remotely.
The operator uses the pendant device to move the robot from point to point
What is teach by example
a human provides the action and moving the robot by hand
What are actuators
small motors attached directly to the structure of the machine to facilitate movement.
What are end-effectors
tools that do the actual work and interact with the environment or workplace
